Robin Kobaly

Robin Kobaly

Robin is a botanist and plant ecologist with expertise in plant communities in the deserts of the American southwest. She earned a master's degree from the University of California at Riverside, and has 33 years' experience in plant ecology, wildlife biology, land use management, aerial photo interpretation, and natural history interpretation. She served as a botanist for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for 21 years, working on regional conservation plans, habitat management plans, management plans for Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, and environmental impact statement.

Kobaly has interpreted aerial photography to determine plant species composition, cover, biomass, and productivity desert-wide in California, and has integrated satellite imagery, aerial photography, and ground data to help produce the vegetation map for the California Desert Conservation Area. Kobaly has worked with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to train scientists from NASA and BLM in new techniques for vegetation and soils mapping. She has conducted inventories and monitored impacts to rare, threatened, and endangered plant species, and resolved conflicts between resource protection and human activities within "Watchable Wildlife Areas", wildlife preserves, and Areas of Critical Environmental Concern.

Ancient Plant Profiles

SummerTree Institute, 2010

Plants of the arid southwest survive conditions that commonly defeat other life forms. Yet one of their most important adaptations for withstanding the rigors of drought and extreme weather, long life, is little documented or appreciated. Without great size to distinguish these ancient plants, they are routinely bulldozed for development. With each plant lost, we lose centuries of soil stability, wildlife protection, and a piece of a community we will never replace in our lifetime.

In order to help the rapidly developing communities of the southwest recognize and retain their long-lived native plants, Robin wrote this book to assist The SummerTree Institute in launching their SAVING THE ANCIENTS program, a public awareness program designed to encourage protection and planting of long-lived southwest native plants, while improving the environment for people and wildlife.

This 34-page color booklet highlights 14 plants of the Mojave and Colorado Desert regions. Pages are laminated and bound for field durability.

This booklet provides the following:

  • Photographs for plant identification in the wild and in your yard
  • Drawings showing detail of leaves, fruit and flowers
  • Photographs of the plant in dormancy (if applicable)
  • Photographs for scale next to a 5'9" human silhouette
  • Plant longevity information
  • How the plants enrich their home habitats and gardens
  • Associated wildlife interactions and traditional uses
